The quick answer

Perimenopause and menopause change your skin because falling estrogen slows collagen, moisture and cell renewal. The most common signs are breakouts along the jaw, dark spots or melasma, dryness, dullness and loss of firmness. At Crystal Ngozi Beauty & Esthetics in Tucker, GA, we treat all skin types and specialize in Black and brown skin, using corrective peels, collagen-building ProCell Microchanneling, microcurrent and targeted home care, without the harsh treatments that can leave deeper skin tones darker.

What is happening

It is not your imagination, and it is not your products

Starting in your late 30s and 40s, estrogen begins to fluctuate and fall. Estrogen supports collagen, hydration and how quickly your skin renews itself. As it drops, research shows skin loses about 30% of its collagen in the first five years after menopause, and cell turnover slows dramatically.

That is why the routine that worked for years suddenly does not, why dark marks linger for months and why breakouts show up in places they never did before.

Why skin of color needs a different approach

Hormonal skin changes, treated safely for melanin-rich skin

Most anti-aging advice was not written for deeper skin tones. High-strength retinol, aggressive exfoliation and many heat-based lasers can trigger inflammation that leaves Black and brown skin darker. Melasma is also more stubborn on melanin-rich skin and often appears without much sun at all. Here is how we match each change to the right care.

Watch

What perimenopause is doing to your skin

Your skin did not betray you. Your hormones shifted, and nobody told you what that would look like. Perimenopause can speed up dryness, pigmentation, collagen loss and breakouts, especially on deeper skin tones. The earlier you address it, the better your results.

Questions

Perimenopause & Menopause Skin FAQ

What does perimenopause do to your skin?

As estrogen drops, your skin makes less collagen, holds less moisture and renews itself more slowly. That shows up as breakouts along the jaw and chin, dark spots or melasma, dryness, dullness and a loss of firmness. Research shows skin loses about 30% of its collagen in the first five years after menopause, which is why skin can seem to change almost overnight.

Why am I breaking out in my 40s?

When estrogen falls, androgens have a stronger effect on your oil glands. The result is hormonal acne, usually along the jawline, chin and lower face. It is not teenage acne, so treating it with harsh teenage acne products often makes dryness and dark marks worse. We treat the breakouts and protect your barrier at the same time.

Why are my dark spots getting worse during perimenopause?

Hormonal shifts can trigger melasma, and slower cell turnover means dark marks from breakouts can take months to fade instead of weeks. Melanin-rich skin is especially prone to both. Corrective peels chosen for deeper skin tones, daily sunscreen and a consistent home care plan are the foundation of fading them.

What is the best treatment for menopause skin on Black and brown skin?

There is no single treatment. The best results come from a plan: calm and repair the barrier, correct pigment with peels made for melanin-rich skin, rebuild collagen with ProCell Microchanneling and firm with microcurrent. We avoid aggressive heat and harsh exfoliation that can leave deeper skin tones darker.

Can I still use retinol during menopause?

Often, yes. Retinoids can help with collagen and cell turnover, but menopausal skin is drier and more reactive, and melanin-rich skin can darken from irritation. We will tell you which strength and schedule fits your skin, or suggest a gentler alternative.

Do I need Botox or fillers?

Many clients do not need to start there. Building your own collagen and firming the skin often gives the smoother, lifted look they wanted. If an injectable or medical procedure is the better fit for your goals, we will tell you honestly at your consultation.

Does IV therapy help menopause skin?

Our Balance Drip is formulated for hormonal skin and perimenopause support with magnesium, B-complex, vitamin C, zinc and amino acids. It works alongside your skin treatments and home care, supporting hydration and nutrients from the inside out.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. We offer flexible payment plans through Cherry and Klarna, plus single sessions, series and combination plans, so there is an option for every budget.

Do I need a consultation first?

Yes. Hormonal skin changes look different for every woman, so every plan starts with a skin consultation and custom facial. Your first visit is already treatment, and you leave with a clear plan.

Your skin changed. Your results can too.
